20-year-old Christopher Doerr, a British tennis star from Orpington, Kent, has been arrested in the United States on suspicion of raping a woman at a party. The talented tennis player is a scholarship student at Mississippi State University and plays in the college team. The woman, also 20, claimed that she had been assaulted at Doerr’s apartment in Starkville, Mississippi.
Police in Starkville have said the 20-year-old from Bromley has been charged under a state law which says rape does not have to have been forcible if the victim was so intoxicated as to “prevent effectual resistance”. The legal drinking age in the state Is 21.
At his family home in Bromley, Kent, his mother, Doreen, said that her 20-year-old son was “completely shaken up” by the allegations.
Doerr was released from jail after bail of £33,000 was paid.
