Asobi Seksu: Fluorescence Review

Artist: Asobi Seksu
Album: Fluorescence
Label: Polyvinyl

If you like eating kraut out of your shoe, then Asobi Seksu’s first single “Trails” off of their latest album, Fluorescence, is going to be one of your favorite songs for quite sometime. This marks the band’s fourth full-length and is as beautiful and polished as any modern shoegaze album can be. “Trails” is a mix of early 70′s krautrock fat beat drum rolls and fuzzy guitar and bass accompanied by lead singer Yuki Chikudate’s dreamy synth work and full-hearted lyrics. Fluorescence doesn’t break away from previous releases but does seem to have more weight to it.

Yuki sings, “If she comes now, if she comes now” with her best vocal performance on Fluorescence and perhaps the bands’. “Sighs” leads into an otherworldly instrumental that feels like an eternity spent floating in space (in a good way) even though it’s only two minutes long.

“Ocean” radiates with an atmosphere of sound thanks to a sweet reverbed guitar riff, ambient synth and a soft bass rhythm, while songs such as “Counterglow” and “Leave the Drummer There” echo through the album with James Hanna and Yuki’s devastating, aching vocals and brilliant instrumental placement that build into drastically bright numbers. Fluorescence is 2011′s “Best Album to Drive in the Rain to” so far.

About

After being alive for over three years, Gravy and Biscuits finally found its home as an indie music e-zine. The staff is a group of Southerners who love good music, from indie to bluegrass to electronic, and lots in between. Review-wise, we aim to give both intimate and informative reviews without being pretentious. Anybody can use a thesaurus, but we have Southern charm.
