Samantha Bower-"Get Away" Review

Punk Rocker Samantha Bower is one of our Gravy and Biscuits up and coming indie artists. I always have high hopes for young rockers. So there are times that I feel like I set the bar too high and am ultimately let down. This is such a case.

Reportedly “raised [musically] by the likes of the Sex Pistols”, Samantha states that she has been influenced more by the likes of Sum41 and Blink 182. (Now I will get a little snobby here, this is like saying you live by cheesecake and then go bake a cottage cheese quiche…it’s not the same…and eww). I was really hoping this little UK song bird was going to have some grit, but no…she’s still a little bubble gum, like a British Avril Lavinge from way back in 2002.

All of which is great if you like those bands, she’s right up your alley. She’s just not up mine.

However, I’ve given myself some time to get over my general lack of “wow” and have found that Samantha’s girly teenage anthem is still dancing around in my head. “Get Away”, while it is not the most masterful piece of music ever, does show some promise. It’s catchy, cute, and should appeal to plenty of young girls out there. I would recommend her to girls between the ages of 11 and 15 who aren’t quite into full on “punk” but still want something that feels edgy to them.

I’ll admit that as a 27-year-old working mom of two, Ms. Bower’s cutely defiant “boys are stupid, girls are awesome” lyric just doesn’t have the same punch to me as it would its intended tween audience. Though, I have had fun singing this to my friend Jebbica. Still, the girl shows spunk and I truly hope that she can avoid completely succumbing to “MTV Syndrome”.

About

After being alive for over three years, Gravy and Biscuits finally found its home as an indie music e-zine. The staff is a group of Southerners who love good music, from indie to bluegrass to electronic, and lots in between. Review-wise, we aim to give both intimate and informative reviews without being pretentious. Anybody can use a thesaurus, but we have Southern charm.
