I saw Vampire Weekend on SNL tonight and they are great! I had noticed them on my issue of this month’s Spin Mag (they’re on the cover) but hadn’t really paid much attention to them…when trying to keep up with pop culture, it’s hard to keep tabs on what’s really going on! I have probably lost a million points of indie street cred at this point because I went through this phase of hating all music. That was a very strange phase, but trust me…months of getting every homemade basement mix tape in the world in the mail will make you yearn for something a bit more…polished! So, I’d even stopped listening to college radio and, unless it was Feist or Spoon, I stuck to Top 40 radio for awhile. I’m sure the hipsters will tell me I’m going to Hell for that one.
And here’s how immersed into pop culture I’ve become: the first thing I noticed about Vampire Weekend was, hey, is that guy on the left David Archuleta? I swear, those two are brothers or something! Okay, I am officially not cool anymore. Let me go on Vote for the Worst and read some Nietzsche and drink some PBR…yeah! That should work, right?

Anyway, I couldn’t find the video from their SNL performance (Update: video below), but here’s the video I found for “A-Punk,” and it’s pretty cute. The video was directed by Hammer & Tongs (Blur, Pulp, R.E.M. and Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy).
UPDATE: Here is their video for “A-Punk” on SNL

Thanks for finding this! Now I can save my money on SPIN and spend it on a Vampire Weekend CD instead!

HA! I just blogged about the keyboardist from Vampire Weekend looking like an older version of the Archuleta! Glad I’m not the only one who sees the similarity…
