Tragedy struck yesterday at the Kentucky Derby for one unfortunate participant. Eight Belles, the first filly to run in the Kentucky Derby since 1999, finished second in yesterday’s race.
After crossing the finish line 4 3/4 lengths behind winner Big Brown, Eight Belles galloped out and was all the way around the first turn toward the top of the backstretch when she suddenly went down on her front knees.
Eight Belles collapsed moments later with two broken ankles. An ambulance was called and she was euthanized.
The on-call vet told the Associated Press, “There was no possible way to save her. She broke both front ankles. That’s a bad injury.” Aww, poor horse! This raises the question, should horses really be bred for this purpose? Is this cruel to the animals? Is this ethical? I don’t really know anything regarding sports, so I don’t know what goes on, but do you think Blue Belles would have broken her two front ankles if she had been grazing in a field somewhere?
